As one of the oldest and most popular foods known to man, pizza is a unique grouping of ingredients that can be made in numerous ways. However, there are three ingredients that will always remain the same, and those are the crust, sauce, and cheese.
Although many order pizza from the comfort of their home, most prefer to make it themselves. Preparing pizza at home is easy, fun, and tastes much more delicious than one from a restaurant. Other than the pizza dough, the sauce is the key to making a pizza not only taste great but hold together.
In most all sauces the tomato, canned or fresh, is the main ingredient. Next of course are the herbs and spices. Most all sauces are brought to life with traditional Italian spices such as oregano, basil, and garlic.
Depending upon one's taste, the sauce can taste however one wants. Some prefer sweeter sauces by adding sugar, where as others go for a bold and spicy with cayenne. When choosing ingredients, it is important to note that fresh ingredients are better, but the flavors are much stronger. This is especially true when using fresh garlic.
For those that may not like red sauces, a white sauce is a great alternative. With a base made from milk, garlic, flour, and butter, this classic roux is found mostly on California style pizzas. When making a homemade pizza sauce one can make a large amount and then can the rest.
Canned pizza sauces are stored in the pantry, and then refrigerated when opened for use within 7 days. Canned pizza sauce works great later as a staple for just about any Italian dish like spaghetti or lasagna. It can also be used as a base for a hearty vegetable soup too.
Regardless of what it may be used for, homemade pizza sauce will taste better than anything that could possibly be bought in a store.
